1841 Census for Milton Workhouse
Society Notes:
- The general absence of occupations recorded in this table - a "census" in 1841 was little more than a simple head-count.
- Census data from our two major workhouses (Milton and Faversham) illustrate a number of things, e.g.:
- which occupations (from the 1851 Census onwards) were in decline in the Eighteen and Nineteenth Centuries
- how families and communities responded to poverty in old-age and infirmity
- how the loss of bread-winner led to whole families being placed in workhouses
- how single women with children faced abandonment
- the plight of seasonal workers, the feckless or borderline criminals
Each work-house applied its own regimes of occupying the hands of their inmates. This varied between breaking stones, picking okum (pulling old ropes apart for use in sealing gaps between ships’ timbers with added tar), and simple gardening to help feed the inmates.
